With the SL2-S, Leica presents a high-quality full-frame system camera with a new sensor and professional video functions.

Leica SL2-S
reverse exposed 24 megapixel CMOS sensor
with 5-axis image stabiliser
Cine4K videos with 60 fps
Leica describes the SL2-S as a hybrid camera that is not only at home in the world of photography, but above all in the world of video. The basis for the numerous professional film functions is a new, back-illuminated CMOS sensor. In contrast to the SL2, it only has a resolution of 24 megapixels. The advantage of the reduced resolution is a significantly increased sensor sensitivity : with ISO 100,000, the SL2-S offers you a maximum value that is twice as high. Like its 47-megapixel counterpart, the hybrid model has a buffer memory size of 4 GB and works with the same Maestro III processor. Nevertheless, it is ahead in terms of continuous shooting speed. In very fast continuous mode, it now shoots up to 25 images per second instead of 20. There is also a 5-axis image stabiliser, which is said to be able to compensate for up to 5.5 f-stops.

Hybrid camera with high continuous shooting speed and Cine4K video
To appeal specifically to video professionals, the SL2-S comes with a new user interface . Thanks to the two separate shooting menus for photo and video mode, you can quickly switch between the two modes without having to re-enter the settings you have made. For high-resolution videos in wide cinema format, the camera films in Cine4K with a maximum of 60 frames per second. The L-Log Gamma colour profile with 10-bit resolution and 4:2:2 sampling is available for further professional post-processing. Unlike the SL2, unlimited video recording time is now possible. A firmware update announced for spring 2021 will provide even more video features. Among other things, the manufacturer promises efficient HEVC video compression with 10-bit colour depth, an integrated waveform monitor and an automatic follow focus function.

High-quality, heavy magnesium housing without swivelling monitor

The only external difference to the SL2 is the black Leica lettering . Otherwise, the 931 g magnesium housing, which is sealed against dust and splash water, is identical in construction. This applies to both the excellent viewfinder with 5.76 million pixels and the 3.2 inch touch monitor. However, the latter is still permanently installed and cannot be rotated and swivelled, as would be desirable for video purposes
